British Gas Apprenticeships

Read about the British Gas apprenticeships for the gas servicing and repair and heating installation

British Gas prides itself on the quality of its Engineers and invests heavily in their training at its Engineering Academy. This investment is essential to providing the right number of highly skilled plumbers and electricians to meet the growing need of the business.

There are two main Apprenticeship routes into the British Gas business which are outlined below: -

1. Apprentice technical engineer

This is the route which supports the Homecare range of products Technical engineers carry out the repair of customers’ central heating systems and appliances, plus system maintenance including an annual service inspection . They also control and design system upgrades to improve efficiency and flexibility to ensure that the British Gas boiler range is continually improving to meet customers changing needs.

Technical engineers are provided with the latest support equipment including a DVD laptop computer, enabling cutting-edge fault diagnostics, instant parts ordering, work history and access to a vast technical reference library. In this way the engineer, when they visit your home, is always supported by access to technical expertise to overcome most problems they will encounter.

2. Apprentice technical installation engineer

In addition to servicing and maintaining central heating systems and boilers the company is one of the major installers of Gas Central Heating in the country. Technical installation engineers, working individually or with a colleague, are involved in the entire central heating installation process. This includes planning the job in consultation with the customer, and installing, testing and commissioning the system.

Apprentice training

Apprentices will work towards NVQ/SNVQ level 3 under continual assessment, both in the training center and on real jobs in customers’ houses. Up to 30 weeks is spent at the Engineering Academy and the remainder of the training period is spent working with an engineer gaining valuable field experience. When the training is complete, you will start a process of support and guidance designed to ease you gradually into your role.

New for the training program in 2007 is a partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. As a result all apprentices will undertake an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development with those completing the programme by their 25th birthday receiving the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.
