British Gas started in the 19th century and the Gas Light and Coke Company.
The origins of the modern day British Gas can be traced back into the 19th century and the Gas Light and Coke Company. This organisation was set up two hundred years ago in 1812 to supply London with gas manufactured by burning coal. In those days there were no gas fields in the North Sea or tankers shipping gas from the far east.
Within four years the Gas Light and Coke Company was so successful it had expanded its services out to the provinces of the United Kingdom and Preston became the first town to be lit by gas outside London.
Whilst this represented progress it is amusing to note that gas lamps are still in operation today in London around the Royal Palaces and also in Westminster. These artifacts are still managed by British Gas as it maintains part of the nations history. Many tourists and inhabitants of London walk by each day unaware of the history attached to these items.
By 1920 gas had grown to become a major feature in the British home, through new appliances specifically designed for cooking food, heating water and providing warmth through the cold winters.
Nowadays gas use has increased even more in the home, a gas central heating system is a feature of many modern homes. Gone are the days when you would wake up with ice on the inside of the windows, now most areas of the home are heated by gas and are far more comfortable. With this increased exposure to gas central heating and gas appliances there is an increased need for help with our gas systems.
British Gas has evolved from that simple gas production company to include a major service division which visits customers homes to help them with home maintenance emergencies.
